Create awe-inspiring images in the gigantic sandbox of Namibia

The world’s tallest sand dunes are in Namibia, and the vivid red colors are incredible, giving the impression that you are on another planet! But Namibia is not just about the dunes. There are rusty shipwrecks, eerie petrified trees, unique wildlife, some of the darkest night skies on the planet, fascinating people, abandoned towns in a desert, and one of the world’s strangest trees, the quiver tree.

Activity Level

Generally easy, with a 30-minute hike on sand dunes when walking into Deadvlei. Some long days in dry heat.

This tour has an activity level of Easy. Read more about the Activity Levels for our trips.

  • Day 1: Arrive in Windhoek

Arrive at Hosea Kutako International Airport (WDH) before 1:00 PM on this day. Air travel delays are possible, so please consider arriving early, possibly the day prior. We don't want you to miss out on trip activities. Airport transfer is included on arrival.

You will be transported to our lodge in Windhoek, and we’ll enjoy our first meal together in the beautiful surroundings. Note: the easiest way to get to Windhoek is to fly to Johannesburg (South Africa), where the group can meet and take the same flight to Windhoek together. We’ll advise you which Windhoek flight to book.

  • Day 2: Travel to Quiver Tree Forest

Today, we travel to the Quiver Tree Forest to photograph the Milky Way and stars over the quiver trees from sunset to sunrise.

  • Day 3: Quiver Trees to Kolmanskop

We will enjoy one final morning with a visit to the Quiver Tree Forest and Devil’s Playground. We will then head west through harsh but beautiful terrain, which changes from vast open desert plains to a small town called Aus, where you can view and hopefully photograph the feral horses before heading to Lüderitz. On the way, we will have our first stop at Kolmanskop, a ghost town being swallowed by the sand.

  • Day 4: Kolmanskop

Today, we return to the ghost town of Kolmanskop. We will be there at first light and late in the day to ensure you can explore all the buildings under different lighting conditions. Between our photo sessions, we will review your images to give you suggestions on composition and lens choices.

  • Day 5–6: Sossusvlei

From Lüderitz, we travel to Sossusvlei. We stay inside the national park for two nights, giving us access to Deadvlei at dawn to photograph the iconic camel thorn trees in silhouette against the red dunes. We will also have photo sessions of the surrounding dunes in Sossusvlei, the iconic area you frequently see in photographs. Optional helicopter flights above the dunes are available this day.

  • Day 7: Skeleton Coast

We will depart after one final sunrise photoshoot of the dunes. An optional helicopter flight over the dunes is available. We will head north, crossing the Tropic of Capricorn, through the Gaub and Kuiseb Canyons, via the Namib Gravel Plains, and head to the coast. The Namibian coastline is known as the Skeleton Coast due to the barren areas, shipwrecks, seals, and whale skeletons scattered on the beach.

  • Day 8–9: Cape Cross and Spitzkoppe

We head towards Spitzkoppe via the Cape Cross seal colony. At Spitzkoppe, we will have a sunset and night photoshoot in this photogenic area.

  • Day 10: Spitzkoppe and Himba Tribes

After a final early photoshoot at Spitzkoppe and breakfast, we set off on our journey back to Windhoek, passing through small towns and farming communities and stopping at a local Himba village where you will get to photograph these iconic people.

Once we return to Windhoek, we will have a final dinner and celebrate our expedition together.

  • Day 11: Departure

You will be transferred to Hosea Kutako International Airport (WDH) in time for our onward international flights.

You can book your return flight for anytime this day. Airport transfer is included on departure.
