Photograph the wildebeest Mara River crossing and accompanying predation

September is the time of year when the wildebeest herds amass across the northern Serengeti. To get there, the migration has to cross its most daunting obstacle, the Mara River. Here, the thundering herds traverse embankments and avoid the waiting Nile crocodiles before they regroup in northern Tanzania to begin their journey toward the calving grounds in southern Serengeti.

Highlights

  • Mara River crossing.
  • Special photo vehicles with pop-up roofs.
  • One photographer per row in vehicles.
  • Wildebeest migration and predation.
  • Lake Manyara for unique tree-climbing Lions.
  • Optimal chance to photograph the Big 5 in Ngorongoro Crater.
  • Small group size so you get more personal attention and instruction.
  • Luxury camps and lodges throughout the safari.

Itinerary

  • Day 1: Arrive at Kilimanjaro Airport

Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) before 3:00 PM on this day. Air travel delays are possible, so please consider arriving early, possibly the day prior. We don't want you to miss out on trip activities. Airport transfer is included on arrival.

You will be taken by private vehicle to our first location, where you can relax under the Acacia trees as you watch the colobus monkeys from the patio.

  • Day 2–3: Lake Manyara and Ngorongoro Crater

Apart from a spectacular setting, Lake Manyara is famous for its unusual tree-climbing lions and the vast elephant herds it was established to protect.

The Ngorongoro Crater is a breathtakingly beautiful setting and the best place in East Africa to see the Big Five in one location. It is the perfect location to start your African safari adventure.

  • Day 4: Central Serengeti

We travel towards the Northern Serengeti today. We will be on safari for two full days as we traverse Central Serengeti on our way to Northern Serengeti.

  • Day 5–9: Northern Serengeti

Our focus for this part of the safari is the wildebeest migration as they group in large numbers before they journey south on their annual migration path. A primary focus of this safari will be the fabled “river crossings.” With some luck, we may even witness the thrill of a reptilian hunt as Nile crocodiles grab unfortunate animals as they swim through the muddy waters. In the evenings, the campfire will be the perfect place for a refreshing beverage, and the lounge will be ideal for us to review your images of the day.

  • Day 10: Fly back to Kilimanjaro airport

We fly back to Kilimanjaro airport. You will be met at the airport and taken to a hotel nearby. Here we will have dayrooms for you. You can repack, clean up, and make your international flight home.

Book your departing flight no earlier than 7:00 PM on this day. Airport transfer is included on departure.

Accommodations

We choose our camps and lodges to place you in the best locations to achieve your photographic goals of seeing the Big 5 (lion, leopard, rhinoceros, elephant, and African buffalo), photographing the wildebeest migration, and capturing big cats in action. Our camps and lodges offer the quintessential East African safari character and excellent food.
