Travel computer preparation

While not required, you will get the most out of your photo workshop experience if you bring a laptop computer to review and process images while traveling.

Before you leave, update your computer’s operating system and any photo-processing applications you use.

Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop users

There is an extra step for Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop users when traveling to remote locations without internet connectivity. Adobe applications periodically check and renew your license. You may be unable to use the applications without an internet connection if your license hasn’t been refreshed recently.

From one of your Adobe applications, sign out and sign in to your Adobe account to refresh your license. Doing this will allow you to use your applications for 30 days without internet connectivity, so do this shortly before you depart.

Laptop computer packing list

  • Laptop computer
  • Laptop power supply – Make sure you pack your computer’s power supply. If you are traveling internationally, you may need plug adapters.
  • Power strip – Often, hotel rooms don’t have enough plugs, so bring a travel power strip.
  • Portable SSD drive – Laptop computers often have limited storage, especially if you are trying to store lots of images. A portable SSD drive will give you plenty of extra space for your image files.
  • Memory card reader – You’ll need a card reader to import images from your camera to your computer. Make sure you have the correct type of memory card reader for the cards you use.
  • Mouse – If you use a mouse while editing photos, bring a wireless mouse. We like Bluetooth mice that connect wirelessly to your laptop without needing a dongle.
  • Mobile USB dock – If your laptop computer has limited USB ports and you need more, bring a small USB mobile dock.
  • Phone/tablet charger – While not related to your computer, don’t forget a charger for your phone or tablet.
