Ask a Question

A winter workshop with frozen lakes, waterfall ice, big mountain light, and the ice bubbles of Abraham Lake.

January in the Alberta Rockies is made for photographers—crisp air, fewer crowds, golden hour light, and the glow on the snow. We’ll start this photo workshop in the Banff area and finish on Abraham Lake, chasing ice bubbles, cracks, and winter abstracts. Every shoot is planned around the best light and supported by hands-on coaching and image reviews from local pro photographers who will make sure you go home with images you are proud of.

Highlights

  • Photograph the classic Rockies with local experts—frozen lakes, mountain reflections, and golden-hour magic around Banff and Lake Louise. If the skies cooperate, we are always on the lookout for northern lights.
  • Turn winter weather into mood—we’ll teach you how to use snowfall, fog, and storm light to create images that feel cinematic, not chaotic.
  • Master ice and waterfall technique—from long exposures to crisp detail work, you’ll learn how to control shutter speed, contrast, and texture in harsh conditions.
  • Capture Abraham Lake’s ice bubbles —a signature winter subject that rewards curiosity, careful framing, and a willingness to get a little cold for a great photo.
  • We do the driving. You focus on your photography—watching the light, and actually enjoying the ride instead of white-knuckling the steering wheel.

Your Guides

Activity Level

Expect walks of 1–2 miles (1.6–3.2 km) at some locations to reach the best photography spots. All participants should bring their own microspikes and be in reasonable physical condition, as snow, wind, and icy conditions can make these walks more challenging.

This tour has an activity level of Moderate. Read more about the Activity Levels for our trips.

Itinerary

  • Day 1: Arrive in Calgary and transfer to Banff/Canmore

Arrive at Calgary International Airport (YYC) before 12:00 PM on this day. Air travel delays are possible, so please consider arriving early, possibly the day prior. We don't want you to miss out on trip activities. Airport transfer is included on arrival.

Today we will have a meet & greet, followed by a winter weather shooting setup discussion to prepare you for the trip, then our first sunset/blue hour session at a classic Banff lake.

  • Day 2–3: Banff winter lakes and frozen waterfalls

These days will have sunrise and sunset sessions focused on simple, bold compositions—mountain layers, ice edges, and clean winter color. We will also focus on the area waterfalls and abstracts: icicles, textures, long exposures, and controlled contrast in snow.

  • Day 4–6: Lake Louise lakes and scenic viewpoints

The Lake Louise area offers access to many scenic viewpoints, quiet alpine lakes, and dramatic mountain ranges. We will chase evening light at Castle Mountain, visit the quaint, snowy Emerald Lake area, and venture along the stunning Icefields Parkway for sunrises, morning light, and towering peaks.

  • Day 7–8: Abraham Lake

We shift east for two days to maximize your chances of capturing iconic images of ice bubbles, cracks, and winter abstracts. Be prepared for golden-hour sessions on Abraham Lake and in the surrounding area.

  • Day 9: Final sunrise shoot and depart Calgary

We will have one last sunrise photo shoot, then we head back to Calgary for departures.

Departure from Calgary International Airport (YYC). Book your departing flight no earlier than 5:30 PM on this day. Airport transfer is included on departure.
