Species Spotlight: Central American Squirrel Monkey

Introduction of the Species

The Squirrel Monkey is quick, expressive, and rarely still for long enough to make life easy. In other words, it is a terrific wildlife subject and a fine excuse to test whether your camera settings are awake.

Physical Description

This small monkey has a bright orange back, pale underparts, and a white face with dark markings. It is compact, energetic, and almost always brings movement into a frame.

Native Habitat

It prefers lowland forest and areas with enough middle and lower vegetation to support feeding and travel. In Costa Rica it is associated with the Pacific side and certain protected areas.

Where They Are Found in Central and South America

The Central American Squirrel Monkey has a relatively restricted range in Costa Rica and nearby Panama. That limited range makes it especially meaningful for photographers visiting the region.

Food and Eating Habits

Its diet includes insects, spiders, fruit, nectar, and small vertebrates. It is an active forager and often moves quickly through vegetation in search of food.
