Species Spotlight: Golden-hooded Tanager

Introduction of the Species

The Golden-hooded Tanager looks like it was designed by someone who thought subtlety was overrated. Bright, elegant, and often active in small groups, it is one of the standout tropical birds photographers we hope to see in Costa Rica.

Physical Description

Adults have a golden head, a black face mask edged with blue and violet, dark upperparts, and bright turquoise-blue on the shoulders, rump, and flanks. It is a remarkable combination of colors that somehow works better than it has any right to.

Native Habitat

This species occurs from sea level to about 1,500 meters in dense forest canopy, second growth, clearings, and well-vegetated gardens. It can be seen in both forested and semi-open areas, especially where fruit is available.

Where They Are Found in Central and South America

The Golden-hooded Tanager is found in Central America from southern Mexico through Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama, and it continues into South America in Colombia and western Ecuador. It is a resident bird of forest edge, second growth, clearings, and well-vegetated gardens.

Food and Eating Habits

They eat mainly small fruits and also take insects. They are often seen in pairs, family groups, or mixed-species flocks moving through the canopy.

I did not find a dependable species-specific lifespan figure in the sources we reviewed.
