Species Spotlight: Green Iguana

Introduction of the Species
The Green Iguana is one of the classic reptiles of Costa Rica. It can look prehistoric, elegant, and faintly annoyed all at once, which is a strong combination in wildlife photography.
Physical Description
This large arboreal lizard has a long tail, a row of dorsal spines, a hanging dewlap, and a solid reptilian stare that tends to make it look like it has opinions. In some parts of Costa Rica, individuals can show beautiful color variation.
Native Habitat
It occurs in tropical forest, woodland, river margins, and areas near water. It is a strong climber and is often found basking or resting in trees.
Where They Are Found in Central and South America
Green Iguanas range from Mexico through Central America and across much of tropical South America.
Food and Eating Habits
They are primarily herbivores, feeding on leaves, flowers, shoots, and fruit.
Known Lifespan
Wild lifespan is often given at around 8 years, with much longer lives possible in captivity.
