Species Spotlight – The Little Owl

The Little Owl may be small in stature, but it has a personality far larger than its name suggests. Curious, bold, and often seen perched in the open, this charming owl has become a favorite among bird photographers across Europe. Spend enough time watching one, and you’ll quickly realize it’s equal parts hunter, comedian, and neighborhood watchdog.
Physical Description
Standing just 20–25 cm (8–10 inches) tall, the Little Owl is a compact owl with bright yellow eyes, a flattened head, and a fierce expression that often makes it look permanently unimpressed with your life choices. Its mottled brown and cream plumage provides excellent camouflage against tree trunks, stone walls, and rocky landscapes.
Native Habitat
Little Owls are found throughout much of Europe, parts of North Africa, and across Asia. They thrive in open countryside, farmland, orchards, grasslands, and even around villages and old farm buildings. Unlike many owl species that prefer deep forests, Little Owls are often comfortable living close to people.
Migration Patterns
Little Owls are largely non-migratory. Most remain within the same territory year-round, defending their home ranges and nesting sites with surprising determination. Once they find a good hunting area, they’re content to stay put.
Food & Eating Habits
These tiny predators are skilled hunters. Their diet includes insects, beetles, grasshoppers, mice, voles, small birds, reptiles, and amphibians. They frequently hunt from elevated perches, scanning the ground before dropping silently onto unsuspecting prey. Despite their size, they’re fearless hunters that punch well above their weight class.
Known Lifespan
In the wild, Little Owls typically live between 3 and 7 years, although some individuals have been recorded living more than a decade under favorable conditions.

Their expressive faces, quirky head tilts, and habit of perching in the open create endless photographic opportunities.
