Ask a Question

Join us in the Great Bear Rainforest during a prime June window for coastal wolves, with the added potential to photograph bears, whales and eagles.

In mid-June, the Great Bear Rainforest becomes one of the most exciting places in British Columbia to photograph coastal wolves. At this time of year, wolf packs are often still closely tied to their dens, which can create exceptional opportunities to witness and photograph adults hunting and caring for their pups along the shoreline.

This workshop is built around that narrow seasonal window. With expert local naturalists, two photo instructors, and an Indigenous-owned lodge in the heart of this remarkable ecosystem, we give photographers the best possible chance to experience coastal wolves while also photographing bears, bald eagles, humpback whales, sea otters, and the wild beauty of the Great Bear Rainforest.

Highlights

  • Exciting wildlife, real moments: Photograph Coastal Wolves, Bears, humpback whales, Bald Eagles, sea otters, sea lions, and more in one of North America’s richest coastal ecosystems.

  • Hands-on learning: Two photo instructors and expert naturalists will coach you on creating the best images and give you an appreciation for the unique biodiversity of this region and species.
  • Photography teaching that matters: Learn how to work with light, behavior, backgrounds, and timing to create stronger wildlife images in the field.

  • Comfort in the wilderness: Return each evening to a comfortable lodge, good meals, and a warm place to recharge after full days of shooting.

  • We handle the details: From logistics to daily planning, everything is taken care of so you can focus on the experience and your photography.

What You'll Learn

  • Read wildlife behavior and anticipate the moment – Coastal wolves can appear suddenly and move quickly. We will teach you how to watch for behavior, stay ready, and recognize when the best moment is about to happen.
  • Work in changing coastal light and conditions – Photographing in the Great Bear Rainforest means dealing with reflective water, dark shorelines, overcast skies, and shifting weather. We will help you adapt your settings and approach to create stronger images.
  • Create cleaner compositions from a boat and along the shoreline – We will work with you to choose stronger angles, simplify busy scenes, and use the coastline and habitat to tell a fuller story.
  • Photograph a wider range of wildlife subjects with intention – Along with coastal wolves, this workshop can include bears, bald eagles, humpback whales, sea otters, and more. We will help you adjust your approach for different subjects and situations.
  • Post-processing techniques to strengthen your final images – We will help you process your files in a way that feels polished and true to the mood of this wild coastal environment.

Itinerary

  • As part of this workshop, a $200 per person conservation fee is included with each guest booking. These funds help support local conservation organizations and community-led stewardship initiatives in the Great Bear Rainforest and the community of Klemtu. By joining this experience, you are doing more than visiting an extraordinary wilderness. You are also contributing to the ongoing care, protection, and future of this remarkable region.

This tour offers opportunities to photograph wildlife. We'll maximize our chances of encountering wildlife, but we want to remind you that we don't control wildlife and cannot guarantee encounters with particular species. Itineraries for wildlife trips are subject to change based on wildlife activity.

  • Day 1: Arrive in Vancouver

Arrive at Vancouver International Airport (YVR) before 3:00 PM on this day. Air travel delays are possible, so please consider arriving early, possibly the day prior. We don't want you to miss out on trip activities. Airport transfer is included on arrival.

This evening, we will gather for a group dinner and talk through the adventure ahead, including what to expect in the days to come.

  • Day 2: Into the Great Bear Rainforest

Today, we take our scheduled Pacific Coastal Airlines flight from Vancouver to Bella Bella. On arrival, we will be transferred to the docks, where our boats will be waiting to carry us into the heart of the Great Bear Rainforest. Keep your camera close during the journey, as wildlife sightings are always possible.

After arriving at the lodge, we will settle in, enjoy a warm welcome and orientation, and get acquainted with our ocean-view rooms. This evening, we will share dinner and enjoy our first quiet moments overlooking this wild and beautiful coastline.

  • Day 3–9: Exploring the wildlife of the Great Bear Rainforest

These days are devoted to exploring the Great Bear Rainforest by foot and by boat through the Traditional Territory of the Kitasoo Xai’xais First Nation, with a strong focus on finding and photographing two of the region’s most sought-after subjects: Coastal Wolves and Bears. Daily plans are shaped by tides, weather, recent sightings, and the best available photographic opportunities, allowing us to stay flexible and make the most of whatever the rainforest gives us.

Mid-June can be a rewarding time for wolves, as pups are generally born in mid-April through May and remain in the den for their first few weeks. By this point, the pack often stays close to the den, and with a bit of luck, we may see young pups. This season also offers excellent opportunities for Bears and other spring bears to feed on sedge along the shoreline, often bringing them into more open areas that make for beautiful and memorable photographs.

  • Day 10: Farewell to the Great Bear Rainforest

After breakfast, enjoy one last quiet morning in the Traditional Territory of the Kitasoo Xai’xais First Nation before packing up for departure. Before leaving, we will visit the traditional Big House for a cultural experience and farewell.

Later in the morning, we travel by boat back to Bella Bella, then take a van to the airport for our Pacific Coastal Airlines flight to Vancouver. Upon arrival at the Vancouver South Terminal, you will be transferred to our airport hotel for one final night together.

  • Day 11: Departure Day

Departure from Vancouver International Airport (YVR). You can book your return flight for anytime this day. Airport transfer is included on departure.

Accommodations

We will stay at an exclusive indigenous-owned lodge in the Great Bear Rainforest, offering comfortable accommodations and access to extraordinary wildlife and cultural experiences in Kitasoo Xai’xais Territory.
