Leopards of Jawai, Tigers of Ranthambhore and the Heart of Rajasthan
Join us in India for a photography safari that brings together Jawai’s leopards, Ranthambhore’s Bengal tigers, and Rajasthan’s people and history. We’ll search for leopards among granite hills, then spend five full days exploring Ranthambhore’s forests, with morning and afternoon safaris giving us time to work with changing light, animal behavior, and the anticipation of each encounter. Along the way, we’ll photograph Rabari herders, visit the carved marble halls of Ranakpur Jain Temple, and finish with sunrise at the Taj Mahal. From a leopard surveying its rocky home to your first glimpse of a tiger through the trees, this journey offers time to experience India and create photographs that bring those memories home.
Highlights
- Leopards of Jawai: Eight planned safaris to photograph wild leopards among granite hills, rocky ledges, and the surrounding landscape.
- Tigers of Ranthambhore: Five full days with morning and afternoon safaris, giving us repeated opportunities to photograph Bengal tigers and other wildlife.
- Rabari portrait session: Meet members of the local herding community and create portraits that tell Rajasthan’s human story.
- Ranakpur Jain Temple: Explore carved marble halls, where pillars, patterns, and light offer a different kind of photographic inspiration.
- Taj Mahal at sunrise: Finish with morning photography at India’s most recognized landmark, followed by a visit to Agra Fort.
What You'll Learn
- Photograph wildlife behavior: Anticipate movement and choose autofocus settings and shutter speeds for resting cats, walking tigers, and unexpected action.
- Handle changing light: Adjust exposure and ISO as wildlife moves between open sunlight, deep shade, and backgrounds that can mislead your camera’s meter.
- Show animals in their environment: Balance close portraits with wider compositions that connect leopards and tigers to the landscapes they inhabit.
- Create thoughtful portraits: Build a connection with your subject and use natural light, backgrounds, and composition to photograph people with confidence and respect.
- Find stronger compositions: Use reflections, symmetry, leading lines, and details to create your own interpretation of temples, historic architecture, and the Taj Mahal.

Itinerary
-
This tour offers opportunities to photograph wildlife. We'll maximize our chances of encountering wildlife, but we want to remind you that we don't control wildlife and cannot guarantee encounters with particular species. Itineraries for wildlife trips are subject to change based on wildlife activity.
-
Day 1: Arrive In Delhi
Arrive at Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) before 2:00 PM on this day. Air travel delays are possible, so please consider arriving early, possibly the day prior. We don't want you to miss out on trip activities. Airport transfer is included on arrival.
Today is yours to settle in, recover from the journey, and get some rest before we head into leopard country tomorrow.
-
Day 2: Into Jawai’s leopard hills
This morning, we fly from Delhi to Udaipur, then continue by road through the Aravalli Hills to Jawai. The drive takes about three hours, trading the city's pace for rural Rajasthan.
Jawai’s granite hills provide a distinctive setting for leopard photography. We’ll be searching for cats among the rocks, watching for opportunities to photograph them within the landscape as well as capture closer portraits.
After checking into Aaramgah Jawai Resort, we’ll enjoy a Rajasthani lunch before heading out on our first afternoon safari. There’s always anticipation on that first drive: cameras ready, eyes scanning the hills, wondering where the first leopard might appear.
-
Day 3–5: Leopards, local life and time behind the camera
Over the next three days, we’ll explore Jawai on morning and afternoon safaris. We'll start early, heading out into the hills as daylight arrives to search the ledges and rocky slopes for leopards.
Each outing lasts approximately 2½–3 hours. We’ll return to the resort for breakfast, with time to relax and go through images before lunch and our afternoon safari.
Having several days here allows us to get to know the landscape and work with different opportunities. A leopard resting on an open rock offers a very different photograph from one moving through the hills. We’ll look for both the animal and the setting, paying attention to light, behavior, and the space around our subjects.
Between safaris, we’ll plan a visit to Ranakpur Jain Temple. Its carved marble pillars and detailed architecture offer a change of pace and a chance to appreciate another side of Rajasthan.
We’ll also arrange a portrait session with members of the local Rabari herding community—time to meet the people who call this region home and create photographs with a more personal connection.
-
Day 6: One last morning in leopard country
We’ll head into the hills for a final morning safari, giving ourselves another opportunity to photograph Jawai’s leopards before we leave.
After breakfast, we’ll begin the drive across Rajasthan to Ranthambhore. It’s a travel day, with time to watch the countryside pass and reflect on our mornings in the hills.
This evening, we’ll settle into Ranthambhore Regency. Tomorrow, we'll turn our attention to tigers.
-
Day 7–11: Tiger country
For the next five days, we’ll explore Ranthambhore on morning and afternoon safaris. Its dry forests, lakes, rocky hills, and historic ruins offer plenty of opportunities for wildlife photography. Alongside our search for tigers, we’ll watch for deer, langurs, birdlife and the other animals that make this forest their home.
With ten planned safaris, we have time to build on each outing. Every encounter brings different light, backgrounds, and behavior, giving us opportunities to think beyond the first photograph and work towards images that tell more of the animal’s story.
Our safaris will follow the park’s designated routes and opening hours, with approximately 3½ hours planned for each outing. We’ll return to the hotel for breakfast and a midday break, then head out again after lunch.
Evenings bring time to unwind over dinner and share the moments that stayed with us.
-
Day 12: From the forest to Agra
After five full days of safaris, we’ll enjoy breakfast at the hotel before leaving for Agra. The drive takes approximately five hours.
On arrival, we’ll check into ITC Mughal, with the rest of the day free to review images and relax. After days spent watching for wildlife, tomorrow brings a different challenge: finding our own view of one of the world’s most familiar landmarks.
-
Day 13: Sunrise at the Taj Mahal
We’ll start early for a sunrise visit to the Taj Mahal, spending about two hours exploring its changing light, symmetry, and details. You'll have time for the classic view, but also a chance to slow down and find a composition that feels like your own.
After returning to the hotel for breakfast, we’ll visit Agra Fort and explore another chapter of India’s Mughal history.
Later, we’ll drive back to Delhi, stopping for lunch along the way. Our journey ends with photographs and memories that span Rajasthan’s leopard hills and tiger forests, as well as the people and architecture we’ve encountered along the way.
Departure from Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL). Book your departing flight no earlier than 9:00 PM on this day. Airport transfer is included on departure.
Accommodations
We’ve chosen our accommodations to balance comfort, local character, and the practical needs of a photography safari. In Delhi, Pride Plaza or a similar airport hotel provides a comfortable place to recover from your international flight before we continue to Udaipur. Aaramgah Jawai Resort offers modern comforts and Indian and international dining between our leopard safaris. The family-run Ranthambhore Regency has gardens, a swimming pool and welcoming spaces to unwind after time in the park. We finish at ITC Mughal in Agra, where landscaped grounds and Mughal-inspired architecture complement our visits to the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort. Throughout the journey, the aim is simple: a restful place to return to, time to enjoy meals together, and a comfortable base that supports our early starts and days of photography.
