North America’s most renowned inland songbird migration

Point Pelee and Rondeau Provincial Park, located at the western end of Lake Erie, sits at the confluence of two major bird migration flyways and is ideally situated for receiving many birds in transit during their spring migrations. Of the 501 species known in Ontario, 314 have been recorded in this area during the migration. We have scouted this area for many years and identified the best places to spot and photograph migratory species.

Akari Photo Tours is a licensed tour operator in Point Pelee National Park.

Highlights

  • Group size is limited to only six photographers.
  • Kevin has been photographing this area for decades and has extensively scouted our locations.
  • One of the top-rated migratory songbird locations in North America.
  • The first three weeks of May are historically the best time of year to be in the area.
  • Birders regularly see, on average, 50+ bird species in the Pelee area daily, including 10-20 species of warblers!
  • We will teach you how to spot and identify the species of birds we see.
  • Photography instruction from your guide on techniques for photographing birds by day and processing your images at night.
  • Species checklist to track the birds that you identify and photograph daily.

Itinerary

  • This tour offers opportunities to photograph wildlife. We'll maximize our chances of encountering wildlife, but we want to remind you that we don't control wildlife and cannot guarantee encounters with particular species. Itineraries for wildlife trips are subject to change based on wildlife activity.

  • Day 1: Arrival

Arrive at the hotel in Leamington, Ontario, by 4 PM. You are responsible for driving yourself to Leamington. The nearest airports are Windsor International Airport (YQG), Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW), and Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ). Point Pelee is 55 km (34 miles) from Windsor, 85 km (53 miles) from Detroit, and 330 km (205 miles) from Toronto.

We will have a group meeting over dinner. We will discuss gear and techniques and distribute a species checklist to all attendees so you can track all the species you photograph during this workshop.

  • Day 2–4: Photograph migratory birds

We will be tracking down the migratory birds each day. Expect lots of hands-on coaching in the field and post-processing help at night.

Warblers, tanagers, flycatchers, vireos, grosbeaks, wrens, thrushes, terns, and sparrows are just some bird groups you’ll enjoy (and learn more about) during this photo tour.

Our exploration extends beyond Point Pelee to include visits to nearby wetland sites. Here, we anticipate encountering a wide variety of waders, such as the Short-billed Dowitcher, Semipalmated Sandpiper, White-rumped Sandpiper, and the American Bittern, adding to the diversity of your bird photography experience.

  • Day 5: Departure

We will have a final morning opportunity to photograph the birds in the park. The workshop will conclude at 12:00 PM.
