You’ve imagined photographing elephants walking through the dust, a lion looking directly towards your camera, or a leopard resting in the branches of a tree.
But planning an African photography safari brings questions, too.
Am I experienced enough? Will someone help me with my settings? Do I have the right equipment? And how do I choose a workshop that delivers more than a seat in a safari vehicle?
At Akari Photo Tours, we build our African safaris around those questions. You don’t need to arrive as an accomplished wildlife photographer. You need an interest in learning, some patience, and a willingness to get up early. The animals have never shown much interest in sleeping in for us.
Our job is to help you make the most of the experience—and return home understanding how you made your photographs, not simply hoping you can repeat them.
Our Philosophy: Your Photographs Come First
A photography workshop should be about the people attending it.
That means we’re paying attention to your photographs, your questions, and the things you’re finding difficult. If you’re struggling to keep a moving animal in focus, we should be helping you solve that problem while there is still an opportunity to photograph it.
Our own cameras can wait.
This is central to our approach at Akari: personal instruction, photographer-focused itineraries, and your images taking priority over ours.
We also believe a good safari requires patience. Finding an animal is the beginning of a photographic opportunity, not necessarily the best moment.
An elephant might walk into cleaner surroundings. A resting lion might lift its head. A small change in position might remove a distracting branch from behind your subject.
We help you notice those possibilities. Sometimes the most useful instruction is a camera setting. Sometimes it’s simply, “Watch what happens next.”
And throughout the experience, we work within local rules and follow the guidance of our wildlife professionals. No photograph is worth pressuring an animal or compromising safety.
We Plan Around Photography
For photographers, the details of a safari matter.
How much room do you have in the vehicle? Can you photograph from both sides? Are you staying near the areas you want to explore? Is there time to remain with an interesting sighting?
On our Kenya Big Cats, Elephants & Hides workshop, for example, dedicated photography vehicles provide a row to yourself, while charter transfers connect different wildlife regions.
At Zimanga in South Africa, our exclusive reserve-and-lodge arrangement allows us to combine photographic hides, smaller-group game drives, and teaching sessions. The overall workshop has up to 15 guests and three photography instructors, with photography activities divided into smaller groups.
Different destinations require different arrangements. What stays consistent is the thinking behind them: give photographers room, guidance, and time to work.
Which African Photography Safari Is Right for You?
Africa offers far more than one kind of photographic adventure. You might want to concentrate on big cats, spend quiet hours watching a waterhole, photograph gorillas in the forest, or combine wildlife with desert landscapes and night skies.

Kenya: Big Cats, Elephants & Hides
Our Kenya Big Cats, Elephants & Hides Photo Workshop combines three different wildlife experiences: big cats in the Masai Mara, elephants in Amboseli, and photographic hides at Shompole.
We’ll help you anticipate behaviour, use dust and backlight, and create photographs that show animals within their surroundings. Dedicated photography vehicles and charter transfers support an itinerary built around time in the field.
For photographers who want variety without losing the focus on wildlife, this workshop offers plenty to work with.
Kenya: Tribes and Wildlife
Our Kenya Tribes and Wildlife Photo Workshop combines wildlife photography with opportunities to photograph Samburu, Rendille, and Maasai communities.
Alongside elephants in Amboseli and rhinos at Solio, we explore environmental portraiture and respectful cultural storytelling.
This is for photographers who want to return with more than animal portraits—a collection that reflects Kenya’s people, wildlife, and landscapes.
South Africa Safari: Hides and Small-Group Game Drives
Our South Africa Safari Photo Workshop takes place at Zimanga Private Game Reserve, combining purpose-built photographic hides with game drives limited to four photographers per vehicle.
We work on low-angle compositions, bird photography, wildlife behaviour, and changing light. Overnight hide opportunities introduce the challenge of photographing wildlife after dark.
It’s a chance to slow down, observe, and receive help while you photograph, with comfortable lodging close to the action.
Zimanga: Exclusive Reserve and Lodge Experience
Our Zimanga Safari Photo Workshop builds on that experience with exclusive use of the reserve and lodge.
With up to 15 guests and three photography instructors, we divide into smaller groups for hides and game drives. Field instruction, classroom sessions, and image reviews work together throughout the safari.
The value is in the combination: time to photograph, space to work, and guidance that helps you apply what you learned during the next outing.
Namibia Safari: Wildlife, Deserts, and Night Skies
Our Namibia Safari Photo Workshop is an overland journey combining wildlife at Etosha and Ongava with Deadvlei, Sossusvlei, Spitzkoppe, Kolmanskop, and the Quiver Tree Forest.
Limited to five photographers, it offers individual instruction across wildlife, landscape, cultural, and night sky photography.
This is a good fit if you want the variety of a journey through Namibia: watching wildlife, exploring desert scenery, and learning to photograph very different subjects along the way.
Namibia Flying Safari: More Time on Location and a View From Above
Our Namibia Flying Safari Photo Workshop is designed for just four photographers, using private fixed-wing transfers between key locations to reduce long driving days.
We combine wildlife at Ongava with Spitzkoppe’s night skies, Sandwich Harbour’s coastal dunes, Deadvlei, and repeat visits to Kolmanskop. A dedicated doors-off helicopter photography session adds another perspective on the Namib Desert.
You’ll work on wildlife photography from the ground, aerial compositions, landscapes, and night skies.
Our overland and flying safaris offer different ways to experience Namibia. The flying itinerary suits photographers who value shorter transfers, additional time at selected locations, and aerial photography as part of the adventure.
Namibia Night Sky and Landscapes: For Photographers Drawn to the Desert
Our Namibia Night Sky and Landscapes Photo Workshop concentrates on Namibia’s dunes, abandoned buildings, granite formations, and dark skies.
Locations include Sossusvlei and Deadvlei, Kolmanskop, Spitzkoppe, Sandwich Harbour, and the Quiver Tree Forest.
This is our landscape-and-night-sky option rather than a wildlife-focused safari. We teach composition, working with light and shadow, focusing after dark, and building photographs that connect the land with the sky above it.

Zambia Safari: A Dedicated Wildlife Photography Adventure
Our Zambia Safari Photo Workshop adds another wildlife-and-bird photography option to our African collection.
For photographers comparing destinations, it’s worth considering alongside Kenya and South Africa. The right choice depends on the subjects you most want to photograph, the style of safari you enjoy, and the available departure dates.

Uganda: Gorillas, Chimpanzees, and the Nile
Our Uganda Gorillas, Chimps & the Nile Photo Workshop combines primate trekking, wildlife photography, birdlife, and boat excursions.
With two days of gorilla trekking and two days of chimpanzee trekking, you have repeated opportunities to work on expressions, interactions, and photography in forest light.
We also explore Murchison Falls National Park and photograph from the Nile. This itinerary involves more walking than our vehicle-based safaris, making physical comfort an important part of choosing the right trip.
